Eight robbers attack farmer

THE Govender family is still traumatised after they were attacked at their farm house by eight suspects at Tea Estate Inanda in Verulam yesterday morning.

Farmer Freddy Govender, whose 23-year-old son was shot in the chest during the attack, told The Witness, “I’m still traumatised that eight people assaulted my family. And right now I’m just attending to them.”

The director of Reaction Unit South Africa, Prem Balram, said he and his team had a call about an armed robbery at around 5.50 am.

“Freddy was walking towards his vehicle when the suspects with pistols were waiting for him behind the trees and vehicles and then forced him to go back to the house,” Balram explained.

“When he got into the house, his son was in the kitchen and the perpetrator shot him with a 9 mm pistol.

“And they repeatedly punched Govender’s wife with fists and hit her with a gun.

“The suspects demanded ‘big money’. They opened the safe and took two firearms, a shotgun, pistol, several rounds of live ammunition, cellphones, jewellery and other valuables goods,” Balram added.

The suspects are thought to have fled in a white Hilux bakkie.

The head of the security desk of KZN Agricultural Union, Koos Marais, said: “It’s such a big concern that another farmer has been attacked.

“Every landowner seems to be subjected to violence.

“Our country can’t afford to lose food producers. But I’m confident that the police will do everything in their power to arrest the suspects.”

Police said the suspects are still at large and anyone with information is asked to phone their nearest police station, or call Crime Stop anonymously at 086 00 1011 toll-free. — WR.
