WITH R18 000 prize money up for grabs in Sunday’s Lake Eland Mile, the Speck Pumps Lake Eland Mile is gaining popularity as race day approaches this Sunday.

Lake Eland Game Reserve looks set to enjoy good weather with a jam-packed programme of events between 9 am and 5 pm.

Margate Swimming Club PRO Samantha Botha described the Lake Eland Mile as a family orientated event and said it’s an ideal training session for the Midmar Mile.

“Bring the family, the braai, some chairs, picnic basket and umbrellas and come support the swimmers,” she said.

Amongst those who have confirmed their entries are Olympic swimmers Charl Crous and Troyden Prinsloo.

Crous will be competing in the 500 metre, 3 000 metre, mile and the team events while Prinsloo will be swimming the 500 metre, 3 000 metre and Mile events.

Prospective entrants who have not yet entered can still enter events on the day as entries will remain open until half-an-hour before the start of each race.

Individual event entries are R200 per event and R80 per swimmer for the team events.

South Coast Tourism have a few surprises for keen travellers and the Fever Newspaper Group will be part of the entertainment team.

Spot prizes will be given out the entire day and two raffles will be run for a power-saving pool pump to the value of R5 000 and a R2 000 TYR swimwear voucher respectively.

SAP Divers, Tower 13 Lifesaving and Med-Evac medical personnel will be on duty for safety of all swimmers the entire day.

Specialised timing for the swimmers during their event swims will be handled by the Midmar Mile Timekeeping team.

SuperSport will be present to record the event which will be broadcast over 8-16 programmes of Super Swimmer during the weeks following the event.

Swim South Africa will have officials on board who will monitor the outcome of the swims.

All participants will receive medals on completing their races, while the top three in each category will receive gold, silver and bronze medals.

Apart from the R18 000 prize money,29 gold medals, 29 silver medals and 29 bronze medals will be awarded.

Prizegiving will follow between 4 and 5 pm and raffle winners will be announced just prior to prize-giving. Entry into the reserve is R40 per person.
