Elderly businesswoman stabbed to death with screwdriver in Chasedene

AN elderly businesswoman was found murdered at her home in Chasedene Road in Chasedene, Town Hill, yesterday morning; she was apparently stabbed to death with a screwdriver.

Miemie Dutton (87) owned and operated the Trimwear hair salon in the city for the past 40 years.

According to the police, she was murdered between Sunday and yesterday morning. She was last seen alive by her relatives on Sunday.

A domestic worker found Dutton’s body lying on the floor of an outbuilding when she reported for duty yesterday morning.

The police said she had sustained a single stab wound to the neck.

A sharpened, blood-stained screwdriver was found nearby.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said they believe her murderer is someone who was known to her.

“The police believe that the deceased may have been involved in an argument with a person known to her; an altercation ensued, which resulted in the suspect stabbing the deceased, fatally wounding her,” said Zwane.

“Nothing was taken from the premises and no forced entry was gained. A takkie imprint was also found at the scene,” he said.

The police said no one has been arrested and have appealed to the community to assist them with any information they might have.

Dutton’s family described her death as a sad blow; they said she was a wonderful person with a very forgiving heart.

“She was a Jehovah’s Witness and she believed in forgiveness … she was one of those people who always tried to save everyone,” said her relatives.
