Elderly citizens in uThungulu receive gifts

2012-12-14 00:00

CHRISTMAS arrived early for the elderly of uThungulu when they received wheelchairs and food parcels from the district municipality on Wednesday.

The Christmas gifts were handed over to the gogos at a function held at Dlemudlemu Sport Ground.

uThungulu Deputy Mayor Thulani Mashaba thanked all the sponsors for contributing and putting a smile on 600 elderly citizens’ faces from three wards in the Sokhulu area.

“Many elderly people have been abused in the district. We need to show how much we appreciate them. After all, their pension funds might get finished early and therefore we have to ensure that they have food throughout the Christmas break,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba said the municipality will continue to hand out food parcels in the district so that community members can be kept happy during the holiday season.

He urged the community to take care of and respect elders who, according to the Zulu tradition, are mothers and fathers and should not be abused.

“The elderly people don’t receive any other government grant but rely on the pension fund, so it is essential that they receive the gifts. We would like to hand them out to all community members, but we can’t due to lack of funds,” he said.

The Department of Health attended the event to do check-ups on blood pressure, diabetes and other ailments.
