Elderly couple survive attack

No arrests have been made after an elderly Inchanga couple were stabbed and left for dead when they were attacked in their home by an armed robber on Sunday.

Police spokeswoman Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said the man was sitting in the lounge and his wife was in their bedroom when the suspect entered the house. “The suspect entered the lounge and confronted the elderly man. The victim tried to fight back and was stabbed in the neck,” she said.

Veldhuizen said the woman heard her husband’s screams and ran out of the bedroom. “The woman picked up a hammer and tried to hit the suspect. The suspect then stabbed her in the back and escaped,” she said.

She said that before the suspect entered the house, he broke into the couple’s car and caravan in the yard.

“It is unclear at this stage what was taken. Police are investigating attempted murder, housebreaking and theft,” she said.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the couple are in a stable condition at Crompton Hospital in Pinetown.

This incident is the latest in the string of attacks on residents in the Upper West area.

A man was killed in early January in Drummond, near to where the couple were attacked, when an armed man entered his home. He was shot in the head and died instantly.

Last week, a young Hillcrest woman was gang-raped when she and her father took their dogs for a walk at Shongweni Dam.

The SAPS has announced that it will deploy more officers to the area to help curb crime there.
