Elderly farmer attacked with axe

AN elderly farmer was attacked with an axe on his farm at Evatt, between Underberg and Kokstad, on Reconciliation Day.

The 75-year-old farmer was attacked by two men at around 8.30 am on his property on the R617 main road in Evatt.

They assaulted him with the axe, leaving him in a critical condition. They allegedly hit him on the head and also fractured his leg.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said, “The suspects fled with cellphones, house and car keys. Evatt police are investigating a case of house robbery and no arrest has been made at this stage.” He was unable to confirm the farmer’s name.

Koos Marais of the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union was very concerned about the number of attacks that have been occurring in the southern KZN region.

“We call on farmers to take precautions against farm attacks. Don’t keep money on the farm and check that all the doors and gates are locked,” he advised.
