Eldo coach pulled off the road

2010-10-18 00:00

A BUSLOAD of passengers travelling on an Eldo Coaches Intercity liner were inconvenienced yesterday when their bus was impounded at Mkondeni after being ceclared unroadworthy.

One of the passengers, who did not want her identity revealed, said the bus left Durban Station at 8 am and was meant to arrive in Johannesburg at 3.15 pm, but was instead pulled over and impounded after 9 am.

She phoned The Witness just after 1 pm to complain that passengers had been waiting for four hours and there had been no communication from the bus company as to when a replacement bus would be sent.

“We are very angry. We’ve got diabetics here and old people and we don’t know how long we’ll have to wait around,” she said.

When The Witness phoned Eldo Coaches in Durban, an operator who did not reveal her name said she had been fielding complaints from disgruntled passengers since the unroadworthy bus was impounded

She said she had asked them to be patient while they readied a replacement bus.

The operator said the bus would be there by 1.30 pm. When The Witness checked with one of the passengers just after 4 pm, she confirmed that the replacement bus had arrived at about 1.30 pm.

“Disgruntled but happy” was how she described the passengers.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu confirmed the bus had been impounded, but only for two hours.
