Election survey: ‘Why i chose not to vote’

2009-04-22 00:00

The Witness spoke to a number of people who chose not to vote.

Several were cynical and angry about the political situation. A woman who refused to be named said, “Irrespective of who you vote for, we’re still going to have a **** government”. She wondered why the government could not learn from Namibia.

A man who also declined to be named, was angry because he felt not much has been done in the past 15 years. “Crime is still the same, and the government is corrupt itself,” he said.

Some students also felt the government had let them down. Pearl Baatjies, a student at UKZN, said “I don’t see anybody worth my vote. Even if I did vote, they’re not going to do anything. All they want is to be in power.”

Another student, Nonhlanhla Sikhosana, felt that the government isn’t helping them enough financially.

Regan Murugan, a cab driver, said he would not cast his vote: “Whoever wins, wins. No matter who wins, the Bible tells us that we have to be subject to their authority,” he added.
