Elections: Four wards on offer

2012-08-01 00:00

FOUR by-elections are taking place in KwaZulu-Natal today. The council seat in Umtshezi (Estcourt) will be contested by the ANC, the Inkatha Freedom Party and the National Freedom Party. The seat was previously held by the IFP and became vacant after the death of the councillor.

The by-election in Abaqulusi (Vryheid) will be contested by five parties, including the African Christian Democratic Party and the Democratic Alliance. The ward became vacant when the DA councillor resigned.

By-elections in Pongola and Ntambana will be a three-way tussle involving the ANC, the IFP and the NFP after the Pongola councillor resigned and the Ntambana councillor died.

Parties have been campaigning in earnest and the IFP has already cried foul, accusing the ANC of using state resources to campaign.

The leader of the IFP in the KZN Legislature, Blessed Gwala, said there had been a flurry of government activity in the four wards.
