Elections: ‘The ANC robbed us of our vote’

2011-04-02 00:00

“PIETERMARITZBURG a city for all.” This is what the ANC local election campaign posters claim, but residents of ward 19 and 35 do not feel they are getting a say in who their elections candidates are.

Chanting and waving ANC posters, members took to the street on Friday night to protest the candidates put forward by the party for their wards. They claim they have been given ward candidates they neither chose nor want.

The gathering at the Professor Nyembezi Center in Church Street was waiting outside the meeting of ANC leaders, which was allegedly attended by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zwele Mkhize. The Sobantu residents told The Witness that they wanted Sandile Dlamini to head their ward, instead of Thando Matiwane, who had been put forward by the ANC.

The ANC called a meeting to allow its members to vote, but only gave them 24 hours notice, which prevented many of the community from attending, alleged residents at the gathering. “The ANC robbed us of our vote,” said Mthandeni Nxumalo of ward 35. We had a councillor who didn’t perform. We tried to give someone else an opportunity, but they want their people, not ours,” said Nely Sithole, also a ward 35 resident.

“If [the ANC] don’t listen to us, almost 700 of us are going to vote for an independent,” warned Nxumalo.

The Witness was unable to obtain comment from any ANC officials in the closed session.
