Elections on May 7

2014-02-08 00:00

SOUTH Africa will hold its fifth national general election on May 7 this year, President Jacob Zuma said yesterday.

The electoral term of the present government will come to an end on April 22.

“I have met with the Independent Electoral Commission to discuss preparations, and also with the premiers. We deliberated on this very important right of our people to elect a government of their choice, for which thousands of South Africans laid down their lives,” said Zuma in a statement yesterday.

“I am satisfied that the IEC preparations are at an advanced stage.

“After consulting with the IEC, I would like to inform the South African people locally and abroad, that the fifth national general elections in the Republic of South Africa will be held on the 7th of May 2014, throughout the country,” Zuma continued.

He called on the public to ensure their registration this weekend (February 8 and 9). This is the last registration period for this election.

“… Most importantly, I urge all our people to promote peace, tolerance and peaceful co-existence as we move towards the elections and during the elections”, Zuma said.

His words were echoed by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Community Safety Willies Mchunu who said people should conduct themselves peacefully and with dignity during the final round of voter registration.

“I appeal to all people to refrain from doing anything that would undermine the democratic right of the people to register so that they could cast their votes in the forthcoming national and provincial election. I call for restraint, tolerance and peaceful political activity on the days of voter registration,” he said.

Mchunu added that security forces have been deployed throughout the province to monitor the situation and maintain order and control but also expressed confidence that the elections would proceed peacefully.
