Electrical fault suspected in Health Department fire

2014-04-28 00:00

FIREFIGHTERS were called to extinguish a fire at the Department of Health (DoH) offices at the corner of Carbineer and Peter Kerchhoff streets in Pietermaritzburg on Friday.

The fire in the computer server room was allegedly sparked by an electrical fault at the DoH head office for infrastructure’s transport section. But when firefighters got to the scene, they were unable to access the computer server room on the third floor because no one could find the key. They resorted to breaking down the door.

Staff members were not pleased, saying earlier last week they had experienced power surges that disturbed their work.

“We believe this building is old and is being poorly maintained by the department because we have experienced a similar problem twice in a week,” said a staff member.

Another staff member said she did not know how much work could be done because the computers would be down since the server room was affected.

Rodney Trenam, Msunduzi Municipality’s Fire Department fire investigator, said one unit of the computer server room caught fire and was completely destroyed. While unable to reveal the exact cause of the fire, Trenam said there had been an electrical fault.

Health Department spokesperson Desmond Motha said the department was waiting for a report from the Msunduzi Fire Department that would indicate the cause of the fire.
