Elgar chooses Titans over Knights

2014-03-04 00:00

BLOEMFONTEIN — Proteas batman Dean Elgar will continue his cricket career with the Titans.

He has informed the Knights of his intentions.

The Knights are meanwhile waiting to hear from bowler Ryan McLaren on what his plans are for next season. McLaren, unlike Elgar, still has a national contract, which allows him to choose where he wants to play domestically.

Meanwhile, there is also talk that Quinton de Kock might leave the Lions to also join the Titans.

Titans boss Jacques Faul confirmed the franchise was negotiating with Elgar.

Knights CEO Johan van Heerden said Elgar phoned him yesterday to say he was moving on.

“It was naturally disappointing to hear,” he said.

Elgar told him he felt he would get more opportunities at the Titans in his campaign to play for South Africa in other forms of the game, as well as Tests.

The 26-year-old Elgar is playing in his ninth Test for South Africa at Newlands this week, after making his debut against the Australians last season in Perth.

He has played five ODIs for the Proteas, against England in 2012.

The Knights’ two leading batsmen this season, Rilee Rossouw and Reeza Hendricks, are still available. Rossouw’s contract has been extended by two years.

While the Knights will only release their full squad later, the names of one or two newcomers may be announced this week. Johan van der Wath, whose Knights contract has not been extended, is waiting for news about his future. Former Knights bowler CJ de Villiers also no longer has a Titans contract.
