Emergency aid: storm leaves scores homeless

2010-02-15 00:00

KWAZULU-Natal’s Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs has stepped in to provide emergency relief to the municipalities of Ugu and uMzinyathi, following the heavy rains and strong winds that lashed the areas on Saturday, leaving a trail of destruction.

The department said MEC Nomusa Dube arranged for the deployment of provincial disaster management teams to distribute food, blankets and tents to families left homeless by the storm.

“The area of KwaNzimakwe and ward four in uMsinga Municipality are reported to be the worst-hit areas. The assessment of the magnitude will begin as soon as all victims have been provided with emergency support,” said the statement. Dube has urged those who suffered losses to contact their municipalities and the Provincial Disaster Management Centre.

The centre is awaiting reports from municipal disaster units about the status of each municipality.
