DISASTER response personnel are on high alert, from today right into the coming holiday weekend.

According to Cogta spokesperson Lennox Mabaso, MEC Nomusa Dube took the decision following a report from the weatherman that heavy rainfall was expected in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and the South Coast last night.

“… Heavy rainfalls which may lead to storms are expected to hit most parts of the South Coast, particularly areas around Port Shepstone, Margate, Kokstad, Umzimkhulu and the southern Drakensberg,” said Mabaso.

Said Dube: “But because we are living in an age whereby weather conditions can change unexpectedly due to the global warming phenomenon… we are being proactive by ensuring that all the 11 districts in the province are ready to respond to any eventuality that might affect our communities amid the expected bad weather.

The area under threat are the districts of Sisonke, Ugu, uMgungundlovu and eThekwini.

She said disaster teams would be on standby overnight in addition to their normal working hours and urged those who would be on the roads during the Easter holidays to take extra caution.

Weather forecaster Wiseman Mhlongo on Thursday and Friday, there was a 30% chance of showers and thundershowers, going up to 60% on Saturday.

He added that “for now”, there were no warnings until Friday.
