Empangeni defend regional hockey title

2014-05-20 00:00

THEY came to Grantleigh College, saw off the opposition and defended their Spar KZN Regional title on Saturday.

Empangeni High School got the better of seven other teams in the North Coast Regional showdown but not without a stiff challenge from the hosts.

The evenly-matched final between Empangeni and Grantleigh ended goalless at full-time and the teams went into golden goal extra-time, which also ended without a goal.

It was penalty shoot-out time and the first goal came when Empangeni scored at their second attempt after the first effort was unsuccessful in this best-of-five format where an attacker takes on the goalkeeper from the 23-metre line. In-form Grantleigh goalkeeper and captain Caelia Voysey was beaten by Anele Dlamini.

After Grantleigh were unable to slot their third attempt, Empangeni captain Mari-Lee Visser stepped up to nail down the winner and Empangeni clinched the title on penalty shoot-out.

The other schools that participated were Eshowe, Mandini, Felixton, St Catherine’s, Hoërskool Richardsbaai and Richards Bay Christian School.

Empangeni will make their third appearance at finals day at Thomas More College and St Mary’s on July 26 and 27. They join Ferrum High School (Northern KZN), Kokstad (Southern KZN), Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High (PMB Central) St Anne’s (PMB North), Danville (North Durban), Durban Girls’ College (Durban Central), Westville (Highway Regional), Durban Girls’ High School (South Durban) and Wartburg Kirchdorf (Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi).

Wesley Yngdals of Grantleigh won the Most Promising Umpire award, enabling him to officiate at finals day.

1. Empangeni 19 points, 2. Grantleigh 13 pts, 3. Felixton 12 pts, 4. St Catherine’s 10 pts, 5. Hoërskool Richards Baai 10 pts, 6. Mandini 6 pts, 7. Eshowe 5 pts, 8. Richards Bay Christian School 0 pts.
