Empangeni:six security guards arrested after two wounded in shooting incidents

2012-06-22 00:00

SIX security guards in the Empangeni taxi industry have been arrested following shooting incidents in the area on Wednesday.

The six work for different taxi associations in the area.

The police said on Wednesday that an argument broke out between two rival guards.

One of the guards, aged 30, pulled out a firearm and shot another guard, aged 35. The injured guard was shot in the leg and is in hospital.

After learning of the shooting, five guards from the victim’s company allegedly retaliated and shot the suspect in his right leg.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the suspect, who is in hospital under police guard, was arrested and he faces attempted murder charges.

The suspect laid attempted murder charges against the five guards. They have also been arrested.

Zwane said police will monitor the situation to ensure that no further incidents of violence occur.

All six suspects are expected to appear in the Empangeni Magistrates’ Court soon.
