Enchanting and astonishing music on offer

2010-09-03 00:00

CHRISTOPHER Duigan plays a selection of popular music in A Spring Surprise at 35 Montgomery Road, Athlone, tonight at 7.30 pm.

For this performance expect to hear music from the world of tango, including the famous La Cumparsita, Scott Joplin’s Solace, plus film music by Richard Guinness and classics from Edvard Grieg — his haunting Nocturne and Wedding Day at Troldhaugen — along with the elemental Rustle of Spring. Tickets are R90. Stay on for a café meal after the concert — add R50 and take your own wine.

At 3.30 pm on Sunday, music fans can enjoy Rare Classics, a wonderfully evocative hour of music for two of the most captivating orchestral instruments, oboe and viola, at 35 Montgomery Road, Athlone.

Durban-born Magrit Deppe (oboe), British-born David Snaith (viola) with Duigan (piano) will perform Charles Martin Loeffler’s Two Rhapsodies and August Klughardt’s Schilflieder or Reed Songs. Tickets are R90.

Booking is essential for both concerts at booking@musicrevival.co.za or 033 342 3051.

At 7.30 pm on September 7, Francois le Roux, aka the HA!Man, will enchant and astonish audiences with his cello, original electronic accompaniments, keyboard, voice and dances at 35 Montgomery Road, Athlone.

His music reflects his southern African roots and his spontaneous approach challenges conventional ideas in both the serious and commercial music environment. He coined the term HA! to express the spirited way in which he conducts his performances.

Entrance is by donation. Take your own wine. Seating is at tables.
