Encouraging signs for KZN ladies’ golf

2008-03-22 00:00

Golfers from all over KZN took part in the Midlands Ladies’ Championships at Victoria Country Club (VCC) last weekend.

The event was sponsored by Pam Golding Properties and the top golfers in the province were treated to cool conditions and responded with some low scoring.

The six Gold Division (0-9 handicap) players and the 14 Silver Division (10-18 handicap) players battled it out over 36 holes with the Bronze Division (19-35 handicap) playing 18 holes.

In the Open Gold Division, it was Rose Powell (Vryheid) with good rounds of 88 and 80 (168) who finally took the honours, with Lindsay Brown (Bluff) only two shots behind with a closely contested 87 and 79.

In the Closed Division (Midlands players only), Wendy Gibhard (Maritzburg Golf Club) took home the trophy.

In the Open Silver Division it was Mieke Walsh (VCC) who won a very closely contested division with a score of 92-87-179 over Paula Tedder (Kloof), only one shot behind with a score of 88-92-180.

In the Closed Division (Midlands players only), Mieke Walsh (VCC) was once again the winner over Pat Smith (Cato Ridge).

The Open Bronze Division was won by Barbara Ascough (Cato Ridge) with a 98 gross.

The Team Event (Stableford) — the best two scores out of three — was taken by Pat Smith, Nel Hean and Barbara Ascough of Cato Ridge Golf Club.

It was encouraging to see several promising juniors in the province in action. Among them were Claudia Redinger (16) of Kloof, Zena Bheekie (17) of Durban Country Club, Sam Erasmus (14) from Cato Ridge and Katherine Lindsay (15) of the host club (VCC), as well as one of the up-and-coming development players, Phili Mnculwane (Mooi River).
