End off the year with a bang

2011-12-29 00:00

IF you’re looking for a party to see in the new year, KwaZulu-Natal has a number of festival line-ups in addition to venues which are staging special parties.

The New Year’s party at the Village Centre in Ballito features the 5FM DJ line-up of Fresh (pictured right), Euphonik, Roger Goode, Gareth Cliff, C-Live, Poppy and Rob Vember, plus artists GoodLuck, Niskerone, Gareth Devore, the Spindoctor, G Funk, Yaron, Justin Miller, Harel Salkow and more. Savanna is giving away R1 million at the party — which sees Savanna and 5FM linking up two cities simultaneously — one in Ballito (the insane Ballito New Year’s Eve street party) and one in Cape Town (at the sexy Breakwater, V&A Waterfront). The events will be the same, with both events rigged with giant screens and theatrical production elements hosted by all of 5FM’s most entertaining personalities. No under 18s are allowed. The doors open at 6 pm. R800 gets you into the royalty area (which includes a free full bar, own dance floor and viewing deck of the main dance floor). General-area tickets are R270. Midmar Dam

The fourth annual Midmar Music Festival features Theo Kgosinkwe, Zonke and Zahara (below right), among others. Support acts include DJ Tira and DJ Fisherman.

The activity takes place from noon. VIP ticket access costs R300. General admission is R165. Braai stands, alcohol, cooler boxes, camping gear and gazebos are allowed, but no weapons or firearms. There will be a cash bar available and food on sale.

Moses Mabhida

Fact Durban Rocks crew is back for New Year’s Eve at the Moses Mabhida People’s Park. In July, 8 000 people partied at this event, so the area has been increased for New Year’s Eve to cater for 10 000.

Durban’s biggest label, Afrotainment, will be putting the line-up together with a mix of local stars.

The New Year’s Eve countdown will be a big-screen event with DJ Tira and artists, including DJ Siyanda, Big Nuz, Oskido, Professor, Lvovo and Zakes, and the MCs Oros, Sexa and Mzokoloko.

Tickets are available at Computicket, Shoprite Checkers or Checkers Hyper, and cost R165 for general admission and R400 for VIP admission (which includes free parking, food and welcome drinks by sponsors).

Gates open at 4 pm.

Smoking Dragon Festival

Nestled at the foot of the Drakensberg, the Smoking Dragon Festival offers New Year’s revellers a breath of fresh air, sights for sore eyes and the perfect soundtrack to see 2011 off in style tomorrow night.

The artists on the line-up include Madala Kunene, Josie Field, John Ellis, City Bowl Mizers, The Brother Moves On, Cortina Whiplash and many more.

The festival takes place at the Amphitheatre Backpackers on the R74 between Winterton and Bergville, and is the perfect event to celebrate with the family, whether you are camping or lucky enough to snap up one of the limited number of chalets that are on site.

Tickets for the three-day pass (from today) go for R300, and can be bought online at PayFast, or R400 at the gate.

For more information and to book, phone Slingshot Productions at 084 510 3107.

If you’re in Umhlanga you can support Pietermaritzburg talent De’Monique (right) — the sister duo of Deme and Niqi Harris — who will follow up previous accomplishments by opening for another international act, Fat Boy Scoop, at the Wavehouse on New Year’s Eve.

Fat Boy Scoop is renowned for his chart-topper Be Faithful, and his collaborations with artists Jay-Z and Faith Evans.

Tickets can be purchased through Computicket or at the door. Doors open at 6 pm. Tickets range from R250 to R600.
