Enduro Africa riders get ready for cross-country journey

2011-10-11 00:00

THE Enduro Africa motorcycle adventure arrives in Port Edward today as 60 international riders complete their ride from Port Elizabeth.

The ride is in aid of the United Nations Children’s Fund, Sentabale (Prince Harry’s Lesotho Fund), the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Touch Africa.

A second group of 60 riders will then depart from Port Edward to Port Elizabeth next Tuesday. The entire adventure is done in 12 days with eight of the days being dedicated to the ride.

The riders will arrive and depart from T.O. Strand Leisure Bay in Port Edward.

The motorcycle rally aims to raise between R10 and 15 million for the charities it supports.

Hilda Gabriel from South Coast tourism said that the rally is more a test of endurance than skill on a bike and it is both physically and mentally draining for the riders.

“This is a team event ride with a purpose. These amazing participants, ride from dawn to dusk each day taking in the awesome Wild Coast of South Africa, one of the continent’s most stunning landscapes in their mission to help save and improve lives in South Africa and Africa.”

Gabriel said Africa has many issues that need addressing, many of which impact on society’s most vulnerable people, the young and the old.

“Enduro Africa contributes to Africa by working in association with charities that have demonstrated success to help save and improve the lives of many people in desperate need.”

Riders pass through some of the poorest communities in the Eastern Cape during their ride.

Prince William, Prince Harry and Mervin Woods (multiple winner of the Roof of Africa Motor race) are amongst some of the celebrities that have taken part in previous Enduro Africa Rides.
