Engagement best training for tennis star

2012-02-11 00:00

IN this tennis match, it’s love-all.

Pietermaritzburg-based tennis coach Roger Anderson, who recently got engaged to SA tennis star Chanelle Scheepers, said there was no nervous meeting between Scheepers’s father and himself when he asked for his blessing.

Scheepers’s family live in Harrismith and it was on a surprise trip home for Christmas that Anderson took the drive to ask her parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage.

“Piet Scheepers was very supportive of our decision to get married. It was not the traditional nervous meeting that everyone dreads,” said Anderson.

He chose the perfect time to pop the question, as Scheepers was fresh off her defeat to former world number two Svetlana Kuznetsova when Anderson presented the ring to her, and cheered her up. “She knew I had the ring as we had it fitted by a friend of mine when we were both in South Africa in November. For Chanelle the moment her dad gave his approval was the real clinching factor,” he said.

He added that they are planning a low-key wedding for the end of 2012.

Anderson has been coaching Scheepers for just over a year and there have long been rumours of a romantic link between the two. Anderson said their commitment will not affect their professional lives.

“We both have so much respect for each other in terms of our professional commitments, that separating the role as coach and fiancé is really easy. She trusts my guidance on the court and in her game, in return this makes my job really easy,” he said.
