England coach recalls bad boy Danny Care for SA tour

LONDON — England recalled scrumhalf Danny Care for their tour of South Africa when coach Stuart Lancaster named a 42-man squad yesterday.

The 25-year-old, who plays for Premiership table-toppers Harlequins, was arrested four times in three months and the second of those arrests, for a drink-driving offence, led Lancaster to leave Care out of his Six Nations squad.

England, with Lancaster then their acting coach following Martin Johnson’s post-World Cup resignation, finished second in the Six Nations behind grand slam winners Wales.

Care won the last of his 31 caps in a World Cup warm-up against Wales at Twickenham in August, but then suffered a toe injury that saw him miss England’s ill-fated World Cup campaign in New Zealand.

Lancaster has included 13 uncapped players in his squad for next month’s three-Test, five-match tour.

As in the Six Nations, Harlequins flank Chris Robshaw will captain England. Experienced back-row James Haskell, now with the Highlanders, was recalled after missing the Six Nations because of southern hemisphere club commitments.

The inclusion of Leicester’s Tom Youngs as one of four hookers was arguably Lancaster’s boldest decision given that he has never started a Premiership match in that position, although he has come off the bench 12 times for the Tigers in that role.

In the backs, Harlequins wing Ugo Monye, who played for the British and Irish Lions in South Africa three years ago, was recalled, having won his last England cap in 2010.

This will be England’s first three-Test tour of South Africa and they will also play two midweek matches against select sides drawn from the domestic Currie Cup.

“There is a real excitement about this squad. We have a massive challenge ahead of us, but it is one that everybody involved, players, coaches and management, is looking forward to,” said Lancaster.

“While certain players are not available because of inevitable injuries at this time of the season, we have been able to select the bulk of the squad from the Six Nations.

“We are also taking with us four of the Under-20s team which reached last June’s Junior World Championship final [Owen Farrell, Jonathan Joseph, Joe Launchbury and Christian Wade] and we see the return of two experienced internationals in Danny Care and James Haskell.”
