Enthralling tale told in

Review: Kaput!

WHAT comes out tops in this piece is the art of storytelling. While the story is simple, the fresh and delightful way in which it is told keeps one engaged and enthralled.

Two brothers are played by Taryn Bennet and Helen Iskander with such conviction and craft that one forgets they are not male after the first few minutes.

Their style of performance is very physical, using elements of clowning, mime and puppetry as they draw one into their world of a Mediterranean fishing village under foreign occupation.

The performance is at once comic and moving; it is the characters that drive the piece, and the plot becomes secondary to them.

I did notice that the clowning elements of the piece appealed greatly to the younger members of the audience, while those of us in the older bracket appreciated its skill, freshness and warmth.

However, the cramped conditions made it difficult, and I wondered whether it was really necessary to cram so many people into the venue.
