Entries for 2014 Comrades to close today

2013-11-29 00:00

ENTRIES for the 2014 Comrades Marathon will close today, a day ahead of schedule, with the cap of 18 000 runners now reached.

Those wishing to enter will have until 4.30 pm to do so by posting their entries, with proof of payment, to the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA). Only entries postmarked with today’s date will be accepted.

CMA general manager Chris Bruwer told The Witness yesterday that the online entry system in place this year has made the process a lot smoother, and that over the last few days the CMA has received around 350 new entries per day.

“When the ticker reaches 18 000 [it did yesterday] then online entries will close,” Bruwer said. “Up until now the entry process has been our priority, and we are pleased to say that it has run very smoothly.”

It is expected that 14 000 to 16 000 of the 18 000 entered runners will take part in the 89th edition of the ultra marathon. “It is difficult to calculate an exact figure, but there are always those runners who pull out as the time draws nearer,” said Bruwer.

To combat this, runners who miss the deadline, but would still like to run Comrades, will be able to take advantage of the substitution law, which seeks to replace runners who pull out of the race.

Comrades logistics at the moment dictate that the course cannot accommodate more than 18 000.

“It becomes uncomfortable for the runners if there is congestion and you have a situation when it takes them ages just to get over the start line,” explained Bruwer.

With roughly six months to go until race day — a down run on Sunday, June 1 — Bruwer is confident that all other preparations are on track.

• All cheques, postal orders and direct deposits must be made payable to the Comrades Marathon Association. Please post your entry to Comrades Marathon Association, PO Box 100621, Scottsville, 3209. No late entries will be accepted.
