Epic clash on today

2013-05-25 00:00

WITH just two Saturdays remaining after today, the rugby season for most schools in the province is coming to an end. The fixtures today have some interesting clashes, with the game on Goldstones at Maritzburg College being the cream on top.

This is a big day on the calendar of the school as it is their old boys’ reunion in their 150th year, and old boys from all over the world will be among the crowd of supporters. College is hosting Glenwood in what promises to be an epic clash.

It was announced yesterday that 18 Glenwood players have been selected for the two U18 teams to represent the province, nine going to Craven week. Glenwood should not lose the game, but the College boys will want to show their Durban visitors that they can outplay them.

Glenwood’s backline is slick and if they win good ball and are given space, they are difficult to stop. The College front row is stronger, but much will depend on the line-outs and battle for the loose ball, on who will come out on top.

Across the way at St Charles, there will also be a keenly contested match when they host DHS. The Durban side has struggled, but they do have a more powerful pack. St Charles have grown over the season and they will not lie down. They will aim to spread the ball and tire the opposition forwards, but the danger man is DHS flyhalf Kurt Webster.

Hilton will host George Campbell and Port Natal, who will play the first and second XVs, respectively. Campbell suffered an unexpected loss against Clifton last Saturday and this has dented their confidence.

Westville will host Northwood and in addition to being at home, always intimidating for visiting teams, Westville also has a more balanced unit with some talented players. They should be too strong for the Durban North lads.

Michaelhouse travels to Johannesburg to play St Johns. Neither of the teams has had very good results but the Michaelhouse opposition has been stronger than those who have played St Johns. This should give the Midlands side the upper hand.

Selected fixtures: Maritzburg College vs Glenwood, St Charles vs DHS, Hilton vs George Campbell, Westville vs Northwood, St Johns vs Michaelhouse, Clifton vs Voortrekker, Hilton II vs Port Natal, Howick vs Alexandra, Thomas More vs St Henrys, Kuswag vs Kloof.
