Epworth and St John’s in stalemate

2012-06-05 00:00

EPWORTH drew 0-0 with St John’s, and Voortrekker beat Howick 2-0, before Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School beat Voortrekker 5-0 in the Parkland SuperSpar Schoolgirls’ League hockey matches over the past week.

“Epworth dominated in the first half and created numerous chances, which they were not able to convert,” said St John’s coach Tracy Schwegmann. “Our sweeper Andrea Davies, and goalkeeper Amy Botha, played exceptionally in defence to keep the Epworth strikers at bay.”

The teams were quite evenly matched in midfield and the play became a bit congested between the 23-metre lines.

“Epworth players who performed well were Dorothy Fourie, who was excellent in defence, as well as Jenna Rattray,” said Schwegmann.

Voortrekker coach Charmaine Koekemoer said Vories dominated the match against Howick from the first whistle, and creative

attacking play by midfielders Carmen Potgieter and Odette Craig, as well as striker Bianca Foxcroft up front, was a feature of the match.

Koekemoer said the Howick strikers did not have much possession and on the occasions that they visited the scoring zone, Voortrekker goalkeeper Michele du Toit kept them out.

After a penalty stroke was not converted, Voortrekker’s Nastasja Bondesio was awarded a goal just before half-time, and also assisted with a well-executed pass across the goal mouth, which found the stick of Foxcroft, who slotted Vories’ second goal.
