Epworth girls sink Vories, St John’s

2013-05-14 00:00

THE Epworth first hockey team have enjoyed two favourable results in the Parklane Superspar Schoolgirls’ A League.

Coach Tracey Bestall’s team beat Voortrekker 5-0 and edged out St John’s 2-1.

Against Voortrekker, Kirsten Trimborn scored a hat-trick, with the other goals going to Nicole Schwulst and Nosimo Madlala. Racheal Barnard and Trimborn caught the eye for Epworth, while Prudence Quesha was in good form in the Vories goals, despite the final scoreline.

The Epworth versus St John’s match was a hard-fought affair in which all the goals came from penalty corners. Erin Roseveare opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Kimberley McDonald made it 2-0 after 25 minutes. Jenna Bam scored for St John’s in the second half.

Ally Duff and Andrea Davies shone for St John’s — Duff for her great interceptions and counter-attacks, while Davies at sweeper provided excellent cover. For Epworth, Barnard impressed with her high workrate, good distribution and sound tackling. Team-mates Roseveare and Natalie Esteves also did well in a good team effort.

The Wykeham Collegiate had to overcome stern Howick defence to come away with a 3-0 win.

Denied any penalty corners in the match, TWC opened the scoreline when Cynthia Kijjambu deflected a ball into the back of the box for the 1-0 half-time score.

The previous week, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School drew 0-0 with Epworth.

Both teams gave a good account of themselves. The match was played at a fast pace, both teams determined to win.
