Erratic rubbish collection times irk residents

2008-01-04 00:00

ERRATIC rubbish collection times, which seem to change at the whim of refuse collectors, have raised the ire of residents in the city, leading to calls for the waste management department to inform residents of changes to refuse collection dates timeously.

Ishana Moodley of Northdale said it is a great inconvenience when she puts out her rubbish in the morning only to have it collected late at night, sometimes after 8 pm. “On Wednesday this week I left my rubbish out in the afternoon, but it was only picked up late at night after I called the municipality to complain. During the day the refuse trucks simply rode past the rubbish.”

Moodley said when rubbish is left out for long periods it is torn apart by dogs.

Waste management manager Richard Rajah said the department did its best to ensure that all rubbish was collected timeously over the festive season, but there is a slight backlog due to large refuse loads.

“Refuse collection is on schedule. However, if residents find that their rubbish is not collected on time, they should contact the waste management department and a vehicle will be dispatched to the area,” said Rajah.

Rajah said he cannot say what time refuse will be collected on the scheduled day, but assured residents that they will be informed of any changes in the days or routes of refuse collection.

The department’s number is 033 392 5350.
