'Escape': Rape accused bolts from court with charge sheet

2010-05-15 00:00

A RAPE accused has landed himself in more hot water after he sneaked back into court from the cells during the tea adjournment yesterday, grabbed his charge sheet from the desk and fled from the building.

However, his new-found freedom was short-lived and he was arrested minutes later by police officers who had been alerted to the escape attempt.

State prosecutor Ricky van Wyk told magistrate Mishi Singh that the state will now add charges of escaping and theft against the accused, Thembinkosi Mchunu (35) of Edendale.

Mchunu was facing two counts of rape of a 33-year-old woman, allegedly perpetrated at Blackridge on December 7 last year and at Edendale on January 1, as well as failure to disclose a previous conviction for assault at his bail hearing on January 14.
