Escapee: Killer resists arrest, shot dead

Dangerous suspect Thabani Ndebele, accused of killing two policemen, was shot dead by police on the weekend after he tried to resist arrest at the Nseleni Township near Empangeni.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker said yesterday that police traced Ndebele to a house in Nseleni at midnight on Sunday. “After an extensive investigation, members of the organised crime units from Gauteng, Free State and Empangeni together with the national intervention unit surrounded the house.”

Ndebele is believed to have been lying down on the bed when police stormed into the house. “He put up a fight and grabbed hold of the rifle of one of the [police officers]. He was shot in the upper part of the body.”

Three guns, two 9 mm pistols and an R5 rifle belonging to the two officers alleged to have been killed by Ndebele last week, were recovered.

Ndebele was being transported by two police officers from Gauteng to attend a court case in KZN when he disappeared last Wednesday. The two officers were found shot dead on Thursday morning.

Police also arrested a man suspected of helping Ndebele to escape. “It is suspected that he picked up the escapee from Babanango and hid him at his room in Nseleni,” Naicker said.

Ndebele was wanted for various offences including house breaking and armed robbery. He was originally from the Hlabisa area in northern KZN.
