Escapee’s farm murder trial resumes

2014-01-14 00:00

THE trial of Sthembiso Vincent Shabalala, who is accused of the murder and robbery of Richmond farmer Rob Anderson among other charges, resumed in the high court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday following his recent escape from custody and re-arrest.

Shabalala — who faces other charges in the regional court in Pietermaritzburg — escaped on December 2 last year, allegedly by clinging to the chassis of a van transporting prisoners from the regional and magistrate’s courts to New Prison.

He was re-arrested in a joint operation headed by the Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit a month later on January 2.

Shabalala is currently standing trial in the Pietermaritzburg high court on a total of 10 charges including the hijacking of a Toyota light delivery van from Rajsingh Ramdalal at Umzinto in November 2009.

Others charges against Shabalala include escaping from the Donnybrook police cells in March 2012, allegedly robbing Sadanund and Vanitha Dhaja (and their 12-year-old child) of their car outside their flat in Umzinto in July 2012, and allegedly murdering and robbing Rob Anderson at Richmond on August 7, 2012.

Shabalala is also charged with assaulting a former girlfriend, Angeline Ngubane, by “striking her and biting her” on August 17, 2012.

The state alleges that Shabalala was part of a “syndicate” that was formed to rob people of their cars or steal cars.
