A police inspector is nursing burns after an awaiting-trial prisoner splashed tea on his face before breaking out of police cells at the Greytown police station on Sunday.

Police are looking for Bongani Zuma (27), who forced his way out of the cell, pushing aside police officers on guard.

According to Jeevan, Zuma approached Myaka and knocked the tray upwards into his face, temporarily blinding him.

“Zuma opened the grid door and shoved both Zulu and Ngcamu aside and ran out the cells. Ngcamu fired two warning shots. However, Zuma ran into the nearby field and disappeared.

Jeevan said Zuma was awaiting trial for housebreaking with intent to commit robbery, housebreaking with intent to steal and theft.

It is believed that he is from Mispa in the Entembisweni area near Greytown. An extensive search was conducted in the vicinity and surrounding area, without success. Myaka received treatment for the burns and is recovering at home.

Police urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of Zuma to contact Detective Captain Nalesh Maharaj of the Greytown detective services at 082 411 6512 or 033 413 9034 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
