2013-03-29 00:00

A 15-YEAR-OLD boy was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by the Esikhawini Regional Court yesterday for raping his six-year-old sister.

In December last year, the grandparents of the siblings went to church and left the girl under his care.

“At about 7.30 am, while the victim was sleeping, her brother called her into his room and raped her,” police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said.

When the grandmother returned she noticed that the girl was not walking properly and questioned her.

“The young girl confirmed that her brother had raped her and a case of rape was opened, which led to the arrest,” Zwane added.

On Tuesday, a 24-year-old man appeared in the Ixopo Regional Court, where he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old girl at Nokweja location in Ixopo.

Zwane said that late one night in July last year, the girl was left alone with her younger brother while their mother was at church.

“The accused came looking for his girlfriend and could not find her. He noticed that the children were left alone and raped the victim in front of her younger brother,” he added.

The girl reported the incident to her mother, who opened a case of rape. The man was arrested within hours of the incident at the same location and charged with rape.

KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said she was pleased with the sentence.

“We as the South African Police Service condemn such brutal attacks on vulnerable and defenceless children by these heartless criminals who do not respect the rights of our children,” she said.
