Eskom boss

2008-07-22 00:00

THE speculation in a Sunday newspaper that the ANC could possibly lose control of no fewer than three provinces in next year’s elections might well involve some journalistic licence, but if nothing else such a report highlights the deep dissatisfaction caused by lack of delivery. In that dissatisfaction Eskom’s near-collapse at the beginning of the year must surely play a large part.

It is significant that in a real crisis political and racial correctness cut no ice. How else can one interpret the appointment of Bobby Godsell, the former CEO of South Africa’s biggest mining house AngloGold Ashanti, as chairman of the beleaguered parastatal? That a white male with no political inside track but with huge managerial experience should have been called to rescue Eskom is a welcome sign that reality is breaking through.
