Eskom gets more coal supplies

2008-03-10 00:00

Eskom announced at the weekend that it has contracted 37 million tons of coal to improve stockpiles at power stations.

They previously said they aimed to secure an additional 45 million tons of coal over a two-year period.

Coal stockpiles have improved from an average of less than 10 days’ supply of coal to an average of 13 days’ supply, said Eskom in a media release. It said there are currently no stations with less than five days of coal in stock.

They said that while mines are delivering coal to increase the stock levels, the power stations are burning a significant amount of the deliveries daily in order to meet the current demand in the country.

“The recovery team is confident the target of increasing stock levels to 20 stock days will be met by winter.”

Eskom also has a technical team working on longer term matters such as the modification of coal handling facilities at the power stations to prevent a recurrence of the coal-handling problems experienced in January.
