Eskom slashes solar rebates

2011-04-15 00:00

ESKOM’s rebates for solar water heaters will be slashed, starting on April 29.

The change was explained yesterday by Kristia van Heerden, public relations officer for solar product importer Selected Energy.

Van Heerden said solar heaters installed before April 29 will qualify for the old rebate.

Claim forms must have been received by May 13.

After the load-shedding crisis — in a bid to simulate use of solar water heaters — Eskom set up a rebate programme that allows home owners to claim a portion of the cost of fitting expensive solar panels.

“Beyond the [May 13] cut-off date the new rebates will come into effect,” Van Heerden said.

She said that in January 2010 Eskom increased the rebate level on 300-litre heaters and in a recent memo sent to the suppliers of the heaters, the parastatal announced that every year the rebates on all sizes of the heaters will be reduced.

It was reported on the Fin24 website that the increased rebate on the heaters has largely served its purpose of stimulating the market.

Van Heerden said the current rebate on Selected Energy’s 300- litre system is R12 097.

Between April 29 and June 3 the rebate amount will be R9 960 and after June 3 the rebate will be R7 470.

“The recommended price on a 300-litre Solahart system is R37 000, which includes VAT and installation costs and which may vary slightly depending on the type of installation. Imported 10-litre to 149-litre solar heaters currently receive a maximum rebate of R4 373, but after April 29 this will be R3 280,” she explained.
