Eskom warns house owners against fraud

2014-01-14 00:00

FRAUDSTERS claiming to be Eskom employees are targeting home owners in the Ramsgate and Margate areas.

Four suspects, one women and three men, allegedly go to houses and claim that they are there to replace old geysers with solar water heaters. They arrange after-hours appointments with home owners to discuss the replacement.

To make themselves look like real Eskom employees, the fraudsters carry false identification and drive a silver Toyota vehicle with the registration number ND 291728 marked with Eskom signage.

Eskom warned the public of the potential risk of falling victim to this scam and said the public should not let anyone into their homes unless they themselves had made the appointment with an Eskom person, or unless they had seen an advertisement giving details, dates, times, products and terms of conditions of the solar geyser project roll-out in their area.

Eskom said an increasing number of criminals are posing as Eskom employees to gain access to properties.

Members of the public are urged to report incidents of fraud, corruption and irregularities involving Eskom employees or suppliers to Eskom’s forensic and anti-corruption toll-free hotline on 0800 11 27 22. publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy.
