Estcourt councillor’s killers jailed

2013-12-19 00:00

PREMIER Senzo Mchunu has welcomed the long-term imprisonment of two men found guilty of killing an ANC councillor in Estcourt last Friday.

The eMadadeni Magistrate’s Court found Kithi Mlele (26), and Sihle Ndimande (25) guilty of killing ANC councillor Jimmy Lembede, and attempted murder of his wife and two children in August last year.

The court imposed life sentence on the pair for the murder and 10 years for the attempted murder charges. The sentences will run concurrently.

In a statement, the premier said the attack on the Lembede family was linked to a by-election in the Mtshezi Municipality, where no political party had outright majority.

The area has until recently been described as hot-spot of intimidation and killing of political leaders.

Speaking at the Umkhosi Woselwa (traditional first fruit ceremony) in Nongoma, Mchunu said the government condemned intimidation and violence against any member of any political party.

Mchunu said as the country headed for the general elections next year, everyone should ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.

“Leaders of political parties must educate their members to view political debates, campaigns and elections, not as deadly contests but as democratic tools aimed at enhancing a healthy competition of ideas and as the best form of fast-tracking service delivery.”
