Eston and Mooi River lead the charge

2015-02-12 00:00

ESTON and Mooi River are the strong favourites to take the honours in the Mascor Midlands Country Districts League after posting solid wins at the weekend.

Although only four teams are in the mix, Eston and Mooi River are locked on the same tally of points at the top of the table, having opened a slight gap over third-placed Richmond, with Noodsberg out of the running.

Only two rounds of fixtures for each team in the league remains, the matches played on the first two Sundays in March. One of these could be the league decider as Eston meet Mooi River. If Richmond play their cards right, they could also sneak through the gate and take the title.

This past weekend, Mooi River overpowered Noodsberg by 82 runs and Eston came out on top by 49 runs against Richmond.

Noodsberg v Mooi River

Batting first, Mooi River compiled a healthy 196-9 in their 45 overs, with Dan Green’s undefeated 66 the best with the willow. Murray Saul (4-16) and Lynton Dedekind (3-29) toiled hard for Noodsberg and the challenging total was always going to be a test.

None of the Noodsberg batsmen settled, Green (2-8) and Paul Brande (2-20) keeping them in check as Noodsberg crumbled for 114 to give Mooi River a strong win and valuable points.

Noodsberg 114 (Green 2-8, Brande 2/20)

Eston v Richmond

This was a vital clash with both sides needing the points. Eston made good use of the pitch first up with bat in hand, smashing a massive 248-7 in their 45 overs. James Bryant was unlucky to miss a century, falling for 96 and the consistent Ant Foster added 56. Although the bowlers were put to the sword, George Bronkhorst dug deep in claiming 3-55.

Richmond gave a good account of themselves, dismissed for 199 in 43 overs, Hendrik Marais compiling 53. Best of the Eston bowlers was Rob Hampson with 4-28.

Eston 248-7 (Bryant 96, Foster 56; Bronkhorst 3-55)
