Event: Gundog Test weekend for all breeds

2008-07-23 00:00

The Natal Gundog Club and the KZN Golden Retriever Club are hosting the second of their three annual gundog Working Tests next weekend. The Working Tests will be held from July 26 to 27 at Springvale farm, Nottingham Road. The third event will be held in October.

The sport was originally developed in England as a way of keeping working dogs fit and in training for the hunting season. The concept was adopted by Natal gundoggers and the inaugural weekend was held in 2000.

There are many different levels in which one can compete, from simple single retrieves for puppies, to complicated multiple pickups for more experienced dogs. Artificial dummies are used for the dogs to sniff out and retrieve rather than live game, making it a non-blood sport.

Wendy Sanzin, the convener of the Working Test weekend, says that anyone can participate in the events. “The event is extremely popular at an entrance level for people coming into the sport.”
