Event: Royal Show to move to Easter

2008-12-01 00:00

From 2010, the timing of the Royal Show — the country’s premier agricultural exhibition and KZN’s largest audited annual event — will move from the last week of May to the Easter weekend, which starts on Good Friday, April 2.

General manager Terry Strachan said yesterday that the decision to change the date was precipitated by the World Cup football series, which starts in June that year, and the fact that Nasrec, the venue used by the Rand Show in Johannesburg, which usually takes place over the Easter weekend, will be used by Fifa. “This will open the way for the Royal Show to capitalise on several plusses, including but not limited to, warmer weather, longer hours of sunlight and at least two public holidays,” he said.

“The situation beyond 2010 is unclear, but depending on future exhibitor ‘buy-in’, it is … possible that future Royal Shows may well continue to take place over Easter.”
