Event sees unbelievable action

2011-04-26 00:00

SCOTTBURGH talent Slade Prestwich, despite great form, came short of beating Beyrick de Vries (Um- hlanga), who put on an unbelievable display of surfing to clinch the top spot at the Quiksilver Pro Junior 2011 in Durban.

De Vries pulled off a series of innovative aerial manoeuvres early on in the 25-minute man-on-man final to win with a heat total of 15,67 points out of a possible 20. De Vries eliminated Cape Town surfers Matt Pallet and Michael February earlier on in the day, and walked away with R18 000 in prize money for his efforts.

“This win means the world to me. I have been wanting to win this Quiksilver event for a few years and now I have finally done it. The Quiksilver Pro Junior is the biggest event for junior surfers in South Africa and it’s a great honour to take the title,” said an emotional De Vries.

In the King of the Groms U16 division, Diran Zakarian (Cape Town) snatched victory from 2010 winner Prestwich in the dying seconds of the heat by scoring a 6,7- point ride. Zakarian won himself R5 000 and will be heading to France in October on an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the international King of the Groms finals.

In the Quiksilver King of the Groms U14 division, Ethan Fletcher of Cape Town sealed the win after a disappointing U12 final. Fletcher posted two late scores of 6,67 points and 5,63 points to beat Matthew McGillivray (Port Elizabeth), Jordan Maree (Cape Town) and Adin Masencamp (Strand). Masencamp, one of the many surfers competing in more than one division, surfed his heart out to win the youngest division in the event the King of the Groms U12 division. Masencamp overcame Kobey Oberholzer (Warner Beach), Jake Elkington (Cape Town) and Ethan Fletcher and found himself sitting in the kings’ throne at the awards ceremony.

Brendon Gibbens and Matt Bromley, both of Cape Town, impressed the judges to take the two prizes in the Red Bull Expression Session. Gibbens was awarded R2 000 for a radical aerial manoeuvre, while Bromley won R2 000 for the best waves ridden in the 20-minute heat.

“The final day of the event was really good. The waves turned on and the weather was great. The juniors were surfing so well and Beyrick de Vries’s performance in the last heat of the day just finished it off nicely. We can’t wait for next year’s event,” said a pleased Dane Patterson of Quiksilver.
