• 1.30 pm. The Stables Winter Solstice Festival at the wine farm outside Nottingham Road, for lovers of wine ands rugby. Visitors can try their hand at blending their own red wine. The winning blend will be used for the new release of the Sharks Raggie Red. Sharks players will be on hand to assist. Stay to watch the Test match against Italy on a big screen. There will be music from Vanessa Palm once the rugby is over. The Stables will also be releasing a KZN Jeripico, as well as a KZN Port. Cost is R75 per person which includes a welcome drink, snack platters, wine for blending and music. Inquiries:

• KZN Birdlife hosts a day or weekend outing to Umdoni Park on the south coast. Mark Brown will give a presentation on Saturday evening and will be ringing birds in the coastal forest on Sunday, and there will be a walk led by a local guide. Contact Sally at 072 119 4253 or

• 7.30 am. Howick Birding Group hosts a morning or day’s outing to Ron Gold’s Hidden Valley near Muden. Meet at Umgeni Valley at 7.30 am to arrange transport, or at the venue at 8.30 am. Take the Greytown Road from Mooi River; after 18 km turn left at Joubertsvlei Store on to a gravel road marked Middelrus. After 15 km cross the Mooi River on a single-lane iron bridge. Carry on for four kilometres then turn right on to the D371. At the first turn to the right — about two kilometres — turn right on to the D750. Weekly sessions start with a cup of tea or coffee at 10 am, followed by a talk, demonstration, bingo or music.
