Ex-con held over south coast killing

2010-07-24 00:00

A CONVICTED burglar who was released from prison in June has been arrested for the gruesome murder of a couple near Hibberdene on the south coast.

The bodies of Christopher Early (69) and his wife, Jennifer (62), were found in the boot of their Volvo last Thursday.

The 23-year-old ex-convict and two others were arrested on Thursday afternoon at the Silver Hills workers’ compound about 12 km from the Woodgrange area where the Earlys lived.

Police found household goods, two firearms and six cellphones in the suspects’ possession. The firearms and two of the phones belonged to the couple, and one of the weapons is believed to have been used to kill Jennifer Early.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Hechter said police are checking whether any of the suspects can be linked to other robberies.

Meanwhile, a woman found the decomposing bodies of her sister and brother-in-law in their house in Pinetown yesterday.

The woman had been unable to contact the couple for a few days, and finally went to their house yesterday. She found the front door unlocked, and smelt a terrible stench inside.

She found the couple’s bodies in the bathroom.

The woman had a black plastic bag over her head, and the man’s hands were tied behind his back.

Police think the couple were killed on Wednesday night, because their neighbours saw them during the course of the day.

There was no sign of forced entry or a struggle, and the woman’s sister said nothing appeared to have been taken.
