Ex-cop fights off armed men trying to rob him in his house

2010-06-26 00:00

A HAYFIELDS man fought off two men who attacked him in his house as he left for work, and managed to escape with only minor injuries, the worst of which is a bullet wound in the hand.

Fred Haskins (43), an ex -police officer from Collins Road in Hayfields, was leaving his house when he was grabbed by two people — one armed with a firearm — from behind, inside his home.

Haskins went for the gun and grabbed it, wrestling with the men until the gun went off. One shot was fired, which injured Haskins in the hand and hit one of the attackers in the upper thigh.

The two men fled and jumped into a VW getaway car that had been parked on the street in front of Haskins’s house.

Speaking to Weekend Witness from the hospital where he was getting stitches in his hand, Haskins said he was not thinking much when he reacted by grabbing the gun. “When I saw the gun, all I could think about was getting hold of it.”

Haskins said he believed the culprits climbed the palisade fence to enter his home as his gate was locked. He said in the three years he has lived in the area, it is the first time he has been attacked.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident and the shooting. He said nothing was taken from the house and they believe the motive for the attack was to rob Haskins of his Ford Ranger bakkie.

He appealed to members of the public with information that could assist the police with their investigation to contact Warrant Officer Xolani Zondi on 033 845 7722 or 083 292 2314.
