Ex-cop’s trial in murder case adjourned

2014-09-02 00:00

THE trial of former policeman Brian Treasurer and Mfaniseni Nxumalo for the murder of Pietermaritzburg doctor Bhavish Sewram was adjourned to September 15 in the high court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

Treasurer, who was hospitalised last week with chest pains, has now hired a private attorney to represent him.

He was previously represented by a legal aid lawyer.

The two men face charges that they were hired to murder Sewram, who was gunned down as he was leaving his surgery on the night of May 13 last year.

The state alleges the murder was masterminded by businessman Rajivee Soni, who allegedly suspected his wife of having an affair with Sewram.

Soni will stand trial separately in March next year.
