Ex-durbanite glad family was not at finish line

A FORMER Durbanite who took part in Monday’s Boston Marathon is glad that Monday was not a public holiday in New York.

Had it been one, his wife Deborah and three children would probably have been at the finish line where the two bombs exploded, said New York radiologist David Duke,

In his distinct South African accent, the Durban High School old boy told The Witness yesterday that it was his first Boston Marathon.

Duke, a radiologist who studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, said he was not very far from where the first bomb exploded.

“I was around the corner getting my gear when I heard this loud bang. I didn’t think anything of it and I soon left. A while later, I got a phone call from friends who had seen it on TV,” he said.

That call was followed by a barrage of other calls and SMSes, he added.

“On the train back I must have spent about two hours replying to text messages. People have just been so amazing.”

However, the bomb blast would not deter him from competing in other marathons, he said.

Duke has already done the London Marathon and the New York Marathon three times.

“I’d love to run the Boston again. But, I would have to qualify first, and it is hard for people in my age group,” said the 45-year-old who is now an American citizen.

Duke also wants to return home and run the race he has never run before.

“I grew up in Durban, but I’ve never run the Comrades. I’m hoping to do so in the next couple of years.”
