Ex-mayor in murder trial

2014-08-25 00:00

A FORMER Dundee (Endumeni) mayor is expected to go on trial for murder today.

Thandeka Nukani’s trial is set for this week at the Madadeni high court. However, it is unclear if the case will go ahead as Nukani was off sick from work last week. She works as the personal assistant to the current mayor of the uMzinyathi District Municipality.

Nukani is accused of murdering fellow ANC councillor and trade unionist Grishen Bujram in 2008.

Bujram’s widow, Shirley, said another delay could mean that the case would only be heard next year.

Meanwhile in the uMzinyathi District Municipality, Mayor James Mthethwa also has to make do without his municipal manager and chief financial officer, who were suspended last week.

The Witness reported last week that municipal manager Mdu Mngomezulu and chief financial officer Sabatha Shongwe, were allegedly on the run with their council laptops in their possession. According to sources, the officials were given letters placing them on special leave from August 11 to September 9, to allow the council to consider allegations of misconduct against them.

It is believed the men are considering challenging the legality of being placed on “forced special leave”.

Council insiders also said at no point were they asked to return their laptops when they were placed on leave. It is alleged that the mayor’s bodyguards went after the officials to take back the laptops.
