Exam snack for Richmond matrics

2010-11-26 00:00

RECEIVING a snack before writing their exams has made a world of difference for the matriculants of Richmond Combined School, many of whom would have written on empty stomachs had it not been for these meals.

Since the beginning of matric exams a month ago, every grade 12 pupil at the school has received sandwiches, coffee, tea or hot chocolate, as well as fruit before writing.

This is all thanks to Andre Naiken, who is the centre manager for the Richmond Shopping Centre and Denise Williams, owner of Khayelisha Cleaning Services.

Naiken said they came up with the idea because there are a lot of children at the school who come from disadvantaged families.

While the Education Department caters for the primary schools children through its nutrition programme, high school pupils get no food.

The Richmond Spar and the Richmond Shopping Centre have been the biggest sponsors, although more businesses have since been roped in.

School principal Andrew Ragavaloo said the project has assisted a lot of their pupils to face the exams with more confidence.
